Book of Ruth

The Book of Ruth  (Megillat Ruth - Scroll of Ruth) is one of the shortest books of the Bible, yet contains one of its longest stories. The story is characterized by its idyllic and romantic nature, though serious crises unfold at its opening, both nationally – a famine – and personally – the death of Naomi’s children and husband.

Nevertheless, the crisis caused by the famine concludes already in the first scene, and the bitterness and pessimism resulting from the family’s tragedy are also confined to the first chapter. From that point forward, optimism and hope for a better future prevail.
